Mr. Qanuni's brother, Said Baqir Sajadi, said his brother had a background in the police force. He also studied pharmacology.

Sajjadi added that since Monday this week, he has not been aware of his brother's condition until his burnt body was discovered in the "Regurgitation" area of Injil district of Herat.

According to him, his brother was working in a pharmacy in Herat after leaving the police force and had no enmity with anyone.

Relatives are calling on the Taliban to arrest the perpetrators of his murder.

A health official in Herat, who did not want to be named, confirmed the burning of Hassan Qanuni's body in an interview with the daily Al-Inta'a.

The health official, however, declined to give details about the valley.

With the Taliban coming to power, there have been numerous reports of retaliatory attacks and assassinations of former government forces.
