On Labour Day, hundreds of labourers on Friday staged a protest demonstration in the capital Kabul, demanding work opportunities.
The rally was organized by the National Labour Union aimed at pressing the government to increase wages of labourers.
Mohammad Maroof Qadari, the NLU leader, asked the government to implement labour laws, increase salaries of government officials and facilitate workers.
The protestors carried placards that read “we need jobs” and “we need bread”.
Ahmed Shah, one of the protestors, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “It is hard for labourers to provide their families three times meal since they cannot find work every day.”
Habibiullah, another protestor, said “most of the labourers are forced to beg in the evening after failing to find work the entire day”.
May first is internationally celebrated as Labour Day, May Day or international workers’ day to appreciate efforts of labourers for their rights.
