Iran executed half a dozen Afghans on death row yesterday and is set to hang another seven on Saturday, an official claimed.
The six executed Afghans belonged to northeastern Takhar province and they had gone to the neighbouring country in search of work, the governor’s spokesman, Sunatullah Taimori told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said four of the victims hailed from Kalfagan district and the remaining two were residents of other areas.
He said the authorities in Iran were yet to deliver the corpses to their relatives.
Quoting Afghan refugees in Iran, Taimori said seven more Afghan death row inmates were set to be executed today (Saturday).
“We received these reports from Afghan refugees in Iran. They say the Iranian government will execute today seven more Afghans who also belong to Takhar,” Taimori said.
A tribal elder in the Kalfagan district, Mohammad Islam, who represents Afghan refugees in Iran, said four of the six Afghans executed in Iran belonged to Sarak Bala area of the district.
He also confirmed the corpses were still in Iran and accused the Afghan government of doing nothing to rescue death row Afghan citizens in foreign countries.
Over the past two years, so far at least 20 Takhar refugees had been executed in Iran.
