Husband slaughters wife in Afghan province

Crime branch chief, Maj. Jusawar, said the murderer managed to escape

By Qutbuddin Kohi

As the world marked the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, a man slaughtered his wife in northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Monday.

The 25 years old, after two years of her marriage with the man, was strangulated on Sunday night in Khwaja Sabzposh district, the town’s administrative head, Abdullah Masoomi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Crime branch chief, Maj. Jusawar, said the murderer managed to escape. The man had served a jail term after his wife complained several times of his bad behaviour. Two months ago, he was released from jail.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission head for the province, Syed Hafizullah Fitrat, condemned the incident and blamed those who ordered his released.

Separately, scores of residents of the same district protested against Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel for torturing civilians in Maimana, the provincial capital.

A prayer leader, Ali Mohammad, alleged the ALP members tortured people by harassing women over the telephone. He quoted a woman as accusing an ALP official of making threatening calls to her.

Subsequently, residents beat the official and tied his hands. Later, an ALP commander shot injured a man to free his subordinate, the prayer leader said.

He also accused ALP of extorting 250 afghanis from each newly-wed person and 1,000 afghanis from each family in Ushr.
