Protestors in northern Sar-i-Pul province on Tuesday accused a doctor of raping a midwife, demanding his trial, officials said.
Hundreds of people took to the streets in the provincial capital, blaming the doctor for assaulting the midwife at his private clinic, said Sharifuddin, one of the protestors.
They demonstrators urged the government to publicly try the accused doctor to discourage such acts against female health workers and other women.
Lt. Gen. Abdul Raof Taj, the provincial police chief, said police fired into the air to disperse the protestors to avoid possible violence.
He said the doctor had been detained and would be referred to the prosecutor’s office after the initial investigation was completed.
