A newly-wed woman was killed by her in-laws in the fourth police district of the capital of western Herat province, officials said on Saturday.
Dunia, 22, was killed in Baraman area late on Friday, police spokesman, Noor Khan Nekzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News. With the motive behind her murder yet to be known, five suspects have been detained.
Initial investigations showed the victim, who married six months ago, was hanged, Herat Attorney Gul Ahmad Ramesh said.
Afghanistan Independent Human Right Commission head for the western zone, Abdul Qadir Rahimi, expressed concern at the growing violence against women.
With the latest incident, he said, women’s death toll in the zone since March 20 had soared to 22, compared with as many last year.
In addition to murder cases, nearly 43 cases of suicide, 15 of self-immolation and 12 of sexual abuse have been registered so far this year.
