Teacher, young girl killed in Uruzgan

The militants had given the girl a jerry can filled explosives to place near a police vehicle

By Ahmad Omaid Khpalwak

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a teacher in the Khas Uruzgan district of central Uruzgan province, an official said on Sunday.

Abdul Qayum, a teacher at the Shah Zaman School, was gunned down by unknown assailants on his way home from school Saturday afternoon, Provincial Deputy Education Director Eid Mohammad Khan Rashidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Resident Ahmad Ali said Qayum, 35, had no enemies.

Police Chief Fazl Ahmad Sherzad confirmed the killing but did not know whether the victim was a teacher.

Elsewhere in the province, an eight-year-old-girl was killed by suspected militants in the Charchina district, Sherzad said.

The militants had given the girl a jerry can filled explosives to place near a police vehicle.

When the police vehicle approached the girl, the insurgents detonated the explosives with a remote-controlled device, killing the girl, he said.

There has been no comment from the Taliban about the incident.
