KABUL: A parliamentary commission, assigned to report on the plight of prisoners in notorious Pul-e-Charkhi prison Wednesday termed the conditions under which the inmates were cursed to live as ' awful'.
The commission headed by the member of the lower house Baidar Zazai from Kabul will later meet the justice minister to try improving the situation of the prisoners.
"The situation we saw in Pul-e-Charkhi was too dangerous. The prisoners in the Bloc Two have taken hostage three of the police officers," said Zazai to journalists in a session.
Last week, hundreds of prisoners of the Bloc II of the prison mostly Taliban went on hunger strike protesting against maltreatment from the prison officials. The Taliban took hostage three prison officers, and later released them on demand of the parliamentarians.
Zazai said one of the prisoners' demands was to keep the political prisoners separate from the criminals in the Bloc II.
Pul-e-Charkhi is the most notorious prison of Afghanistan since the Soviet era.
It has seen frequent jailbreaks and clashes between the prisoners and police in the past six years.
