A corner of the Daralaman palace.
The Daralaman palace has attracted many journalists and foreigners as a symbol of the destruction of Kabul. This was particularly the case during the beginning of the Karzai government when this palace saw dozens of foreigners visiting each day. These children stay around the palace so they can beg for money from the foreigners. Their faces and clothes clearly testify to the hardship and suffering they and their families endure. When I spoke with the children, I discovered that each of them had lost a father or other member of the family and that they had no choice but to beg for bread for their families' survival.
